At Jacaranda Dental Surgery Caringbah, we understand the unique needs of young patients and are dedicated to providing a positive experience for your child.

Your child’s first visit to the dentist can be a special experience. Our friendly and caring team creates a welcoming environment to ease any anxiety. We focus on building trust with our young patients, ensuring they feel comfortable throughout their visit. Using simple language and a gentle approach, we teach your child about dental care in a fun and enjoyable way. It’s important to bring your child to the dentist from about the age of 3.

Milestones in Dental Development

Age 3.
Kids should have 10 upper and 10 lower baby teeth. There is hopefully some spaces between them. This is a good time for their first visit.
We look for:

  1. Is there decay or enamel weakness?
  2. Is every tooth even from side to side (symmetrical)?
  3. Are there any habits affecting the development of the bite? (thumb sucking or dummy)
  4. Do they snore or grind their teeth?

Visits between ages 3 to 6 are also about getting comfortable at the dentist.

Age 6.
The first baby tooth falls out (lower front teeth) and the first permanent molars (6-year-old molars), come up behind the baby teeth. These teeth sometimes sneak in because nothing falls out ahead of them.

We look for:

  1. Strong enamel on the new molars. There is a condition called Enamel Hypomineralisation, (chalky teeth) that is important to look for.
  2. Does everything look even and symmetrical as the new teeth come in? Sometimes teeth get stuck under the gum line.

Ages 6 to 10.
Most of the baby teeth at the front fall out. We check for decay and good brushing habits. We also check that;

  1. The pattern of the baby teeth falling out is following the correct sequence.
  2. The adult teeth have enough room to come through.

We may recommend a first phase of early orthodontic treatment to correct emerging problems. We may also recommend placing Fissure Sealants on the first permanent molars.

Age 10
It’s important to check the position of the upper adult canines (eye teeth). These teeth can become stuck (impacted) and timely treatment can prevent the need for future orthodontic surgery.

Age 11 to 13
This is when girls are growing at their greatest rate, so Orthodontic treatment is often done at this time. The second permanent molars erupt at the back. Sealing these teeth can be important.

Age 14 to 16.
This is when boys are growing the greatest rate and Orthodontic treatment is often done at this time.

16 to 18.
Prime time for decay in teenagers. Wisdom teeth may start to be noticed.
