We recently saw this 15 year old patient for a check-up and identified possible signs of tooth decay.

Following an X-Ray, it was clear that there was significant tooth decay and caries needing urgent treatment for our patient.

We then cleaned the decay from the affected teeth and then restored these teeth with fillings to replace the damaged parts of the teeth, helping to avoid root canal or further damage.

What causes Tooth Decay?

  • Tooth decay is a diet-related disease and is almost entirely preventable
  • Mouth bacteria use the sugar from our foods and drinks to make acids that attack the teeth
  • A diet filled with sugary foods
  • Hidden sugars in foods and drinks
  • Decay causing mouth bacteria
  • Poor oral hygiene

Factors that protect and decrease tooth decay risk

  • Healthy diet low in sugars and carbohydrates
  • Good saliva and hydration
  • Fluoride exposure
  • Regular brushing
  • Interdental brushing or flossing

The Importance of X-Rays

X-rays are essential in detecting hidden decay or establish your suitability for a specific treatment:

  1. Pockets of tooth decay in hard-to-see areas of the mouth
  2. Presence and stage of gum disease
  3. Condition of dental fillings, overlays, inlays, crowns and bridges
  4. Abscesses and other oral infections
  5. Cysts and tumours
  6. Oral developmental issues such as impacted wisdom teeth
